Managing occlusal caries in first permanent molars: A minimal intervention dentistry approach to prevention and early treatment
Dental caries is a prevalent global public health issue, affecting approximately one-third of the world’s population, with a disproportionate impact on children. Early intervention is crucial, particularly carious first permanent molars (FPMs). This paper explores the management of occlusal caries in FPMs through patient-centered, evidence-based approaches, focusing on caries risk assessment, early detection, and personalised prevention strategies. Guided by minimal intervention dentistry (MID) principles, dental therapists are encouraged to adopt non-invasive and minimally invasive techniques, including fissure sealing and selective caries removal, while fostering preventive behaviour change in children and their families. Enhanced professional interventions, such as fluoride varnish applications, complement tailored oral hygiene and dietary advice. By integrating these strategies into primary care, dental therapists can reduce the caries burden, mitigate dental anxiety, and promote long-term oral health in children.
